Episode #28: God goes too far

Jonah is a classic. A runaway man gets eaten by a big fish and learns his lesson. At least that's how it's usually told. But what if that's not the story at all? What if there's an experience the other side of the fish supper which blows Jewish faith out the water? And what if it's Yahweh who set the charges?

Episode #27: The mighty have fallen

The penultimate stage of Israel's story is known by one single, desolate word: Exile. As 2 Kings explores the years from the fall of Israel to the fall of Judah, we realise the story has been stampeding towards collapse. Bigger powers are at work, but the fortunes of Jacob's children lie not in the hands of the empires. Their story is their own.

Episode #26: No quick fixes

The saga of the Kings of Israel is a tale of spectacular mediocrity. As monarchs come and go, the covenant with Yahweh wanes. And in the end, Exile breaks up the party and asks some deep questions of a nation still reeling. What is the real value of a quick-fix? And what does commitment really mean?

Episode #25: Peace at any price

According to 1 Kings, Solomon is a sell-out. Hundreds of women woo him to foreign gods and Israel turns away from Yahweh. But what can we read between the lines? Why so many wives; why so little war? Is there more to this story than first meets the eye?

Episode #24: What's your torah?

Proverbs is a masterclass in taking life one situation at a time. For fans of universal truths it's an uncomfortable read. But for the wise it is pure gold. So how does this sit with the fixed and rigid Torah - the Law of Moses? And how can we find our own torah for the journey?
